Although her training (BS Mathematics from University of Illinois) and most of her 'professional life' has involved computers (as a programmer on the Apollo mission that put men on the moon, helping small businesses purchase and use their first computer systems, and managing computer projects for the Commonwealth of Kentucky). She has always had a passion for music and sewing. She began playing the piano for church services when I was 15, and have accompanied Gethsemane's adult choir for most of the past 40 years. Currently her two major passions are accompanying the senior choir and teaching sewing!

Pastor Laura Altman began serving our congregation in April, 2011. She grew up in Northwest Indiana where much of her family still resides. After high school, she received an undergraduate degree from Purdue in Electrical Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration from Kennesaw State University in Georgia. She worked many years in the telecommunications industry in Engineering Marketing and Training.
After several life changes, she felt the call to ordained ministry. She graduated from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) and was ordained in the summer of 2000. Since her ordination she has served congregations in the Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the ELCA.
Pastor Laura is married to Don Altman who has served as Gethsemane's Youth & Family Ministry director yet is currently on an extended medical leave of absence. Their son Stephen DeWitte, also a recent graduate of Purdue University works in his Civil Engineering field with a local Lexington firm.
Pastor Laura sees her ministry as building bridges between one another and God. She loves to open up scriptures and show how God is in our everyday lives. Come and join us for worship on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am. We have a very dynamic and mission-focused congregation that reaches out to our community in a variety of ways.
