In December 2007, the Church Council voted to support Kate Lawler and her husband David Wunsch in their missionary work in South America. But, it was on January 3, 2010 that we finally got to meet them and hear about their work in South America. This was a very exciting day for us, especially for Linda and Candy who were with Kate on their mission trip to Chile in August 2007.
Kate and David serve as the ELCA Global Mission Regional Representatives for South America. Their primary responsibility is to work with Lutheran brothers and sisters in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay.
Kate and David's Visit Us
Emily Williams, a member of our congregation, has been appointed to serve as a volunteer in the ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission Program. Emily is a graduate student in the Masters of Business Administration Program at Eastern Kentucky University and has worked at the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Human Rights Commission since 2007. She has studied Spanish in the Maxwell Elementary Spanish Immersion Program for ten years, which will be a great asset for this ministry experience.
Beginning in August 2011, Emily will spend a year of service in the Andes mountains of Argentina, serving a local congregation. She will work on mission projects in a marginalized community in the Mapuche town of Cushamen and will work for Pastor Sergio Utz at the Cruz del Sur Lutheran Church in San Carlos de Bariloche, in western Argentina. She also looks forward to serving in their youth and music ministries.
