Who We Are

Gethsemane Lutheran is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

We confess the Triune God of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and the Gospel as the power of God for the salvation of all who believe. We accept the canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God and the authoritative source and norm of our proclamation, faith, and life. We also accept the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds as true declarations of the faith. For more about what we confess go to

We believe that Jesus is God's son, sent by God to become human like us.
We believe that the church is a community of faith that began with the gift of the Holy Spirit, God's presence with his people, on the day of Pentecost.
We believe that we are saved by the grace of God alone, that our Salvation is through faith alone, and that the Bible is the only norm of doctrine and life.
We believe that all people live in a condition of misused freedom which is called "sin," and that our failure to live up to the Law of God's expectations reveals our need for God's mercy and forgiveness.
We accept the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion as God-given means for penetrating the lives of people with God's grace and being the visible acts of God's love.
We believe that to become a Christian we should follow the Words of Christ from John 11:25-26: "Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die."
We believe that to become a Lutheran, only Baptism and instruction in the Christian faith is required. If a person is already baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, it is only necessary to attend a membership class in a Lutheran congregation.
